Mississippi may be known for its rich Southern cuisine, but it also boasts a unique and flavorful tamale tradition that sets it apart from other regions. The Mississippi Delta has a deep-rooted history with this delicious dish, offering a variety of tamales that reflect the region’s diverse culinary influences. The Delta tamale is distinct from its Mexican counterpart, characterized by its unique preparation methods, flavor profiles, and cultural significance.

Where to find them: Everybody has their favorite tamale spot, but top choices include the Big Apple Inn (Jackson), Doe’s Eat Place (Greenville), Fat Mama’s Tamales (Natchez), Abe’s Bar-B-Q (Clarksdale), and Hicks’ World Famous Tamales (Clarksdale).

Po’ Boys

Originating from New Orleans but perfected in Mississippi, the Po’ Boy is a quintessential Southern sandwich. Traditionally, it consists of crispy fried seafood or roast beef, tucked into a crusty French bread roll, and dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and a tangy remoulade sauce.

In Mississippi, variations abound, featuring local seafood like shrimp, oysters, and catfish. The bread, with its perfect balance of crunch and softness, soaks up the flavorful juices, making every bite a delightful experience. Whether you prefer it dressed or undressed, the Mississippi Po’ Boy is a must-try for sandwich lovers.

Where to find: Po’ boys are almost everywhere in Mississippi. Some of the best include those offered at Taranto’s (Biloxi), Oby’s (Starkville), Airport Grocery (Cleveland), and Hal & Mal’s (Jackson)

Slugburgers

A unique creation that hails from Northeast Mississippi, the slugburger is a humble yet delicious dish with a fascinating history. During the Great Depression, beef was scarce, so resourceful cooks mixed ground beef with fillers like soybean meal or flour to stretch their meat supply. These patties were fried to a crispy golden brown and served on a bun with mustard, pickles, and onions.

Today, slugburgers are celebrated as a regional delicacy, especially in Corinth, where the annual Slugburger Festival draws visitors from far and wide. The crispy exterior and tender interior of the slugburger, coupled with its tangy toppings, make it a nostalgic and flavorful bite of history.

Where to find: Head to Corinth to get your slugburger fix. Best bets include Borroum’s Drug Store and White Trolley Cafe.

Muscadine Wine

No culinary journey through Mississippi is complete without a sip of muscadine wine. Muscadine grapes, native to the Southeastern United States, thrive in Mississippi’s warm climate. These grapes are larger and have a thicker skin than other grape varieties, resulting in a unique and robust flavor profile.

Muscadine wine is known for its sweet and fruity taste, often with hints of berries and a slight earthy undertone. It pairs wonderfully with a variety of Southern dishes, from savory meats to sweet desserts. Visiting a local vineyard for a wine tasting is a fantastic way to experience the diverse flavors of muscadine wine and learn about the winemaking process.

Where to find: Head straight to the source. Old South Winery in Natchez has been producing wine from Mississippi muscadines since 1979.

Whether you’re a local or a visitor, exploring these must-try Southern dishes is a delightful way to experience the heart and soul of Mississippi’s cuisine. So, grab a plate and savor the flavors of the Magnolia State!
