]]> Designated as a Mississippi Landmark in 1986 and a National Historic Landmark in 2016, the Mississippi State Capitol has been the seat of the state’s government since 1903. The National Park Service describes the building as “…an exceptional example of the Beaux Arts style, vividly illustrating the nationwide spread of academic classical revival architecture in the early 20th century.”

Under the leadership of Governor Andrew Houston Longino (in office 1900-1904), the decision was agreed upon to construct a new Capitol. A design was chosen through an architectural contest, and the Capitol was built between 1901-1903 in 28 months on the site of the old state penitentiary. The 171,000 square-foot building was designed by Theodore Link, an architect from St. Louis, Missouri, and was constructed by the Wells Brothers Company of Chicago. Construction cost more than $1 million, which was funded by back taxes from a lawsuit settlement with the Illinois Central Railroad.

Originally the Capitol housed all branches of Mississippi state government. Currently, the Legislative branch is the only one operating full-time inside the building. The Governor’s Office remains but serves as a part-time office.

The Hall of Governors on the first floor includes portraits of the former governors of Mississippi since the creation of the Mississippi Territory in 1798 and the state in 1817.

Free guided tours are available Monday through Friday at 9:30, 11:00, 1:00, and 2:30. Self-guided tours available during regular business hours. Gift shop open Monday through Friday, 9:00-4:00.

Also: wheelchair accessible, family friendly, good for groups, no admission fee, photography allowed (with some exceptions during the Legislative Session). No video or audio recording permitted.

Holiday closures: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the last Monday in April for a state holiday.

]]> Set in a landmark 1818 mansion on 26 acres of gardens, this stately inn is 2 miles from the Mississippi River and 1 mile from the antebellum Melrose mansion in Natchez National Historical Park.

The antiques-furnished rooms and suites feature turndown service, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Some have whirlpool tubs or fireplaces, and suites add separate living areas. In-room massages are available for a fee.

Southern breakfast and evening hors d’oeuvres are complimentary, as is access to an off-site fitness center. Activities include croquet, fishing and birdwatching, and there’s also event space and an upscale restaurant and lounge.

The home was designed in the Oriental Villa style, with a unique onion-shaped dome on the highest of its six floors. Construction began in 1860 and was halted a year later due to the outbreak of the Civil War, leaving only nine rooms of the home’s basement level finished. The home, which is one of Natchez’s most visited attractions, is open for tours year-round.

Grant took possession of the mansion and used it as the U.S. Army headquarters for the area. Recognized for its historical significance, the mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989. Today, it stands as a beautifully preserved house museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the South’s rich history and architectural legacy. The home is owned, operated, and maintained by the Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

The home is said to reflect “perfection” in its Greek Revival design. The estate is part of Natchez National Historical Park, maintained by the National Park Service, and open to the public by guided tours. Tours of the estate give visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of the pre-Civil War American South, including the lives of slaves on the estate and their role in the plantation system economy of the time.

]]> Anchuca was first constructed in the late 1820s but was later upgraded with Greek revival styling in the late 1840s by wealthy Vicksburg residents, Jane and Victor Wilson. The home now serves as a bed and breakfast and restaurant. It is located in historic “Old Town” Vicksburg within walking distance of museums, churches, antique shops, art galleries, and other attractions. 

The historic home is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is furnished with fine antiques and art from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s with all the modern-day luxuries added for present-day guests. Accommodations include eight rooms and a guest house. Amenities include a seated breakfast, historic house and garden tour, and use of the property’s swimming pool, shaded courtyard, and off-street parking.

Tours are offered Monday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 4 PM.
