Mississippi Freedom Trail – Brutality in Winona

On June 9, 1963, civil rights activists, including Fannie Lou Hamer, returning from a voter education workshop, stopped at a café on this site and attempted to use a “whites only” bathroom and receive service at the segregated restaurant. The activists were arrested and taken to the Montgomery County Jail, where five of them were brutally beaten.
