Nanih Waiya Mound and Cave

Nanih Waiya is a large earthen platform mound and cave site located in Winston County. Called the Mother Mound, the site is considered to be the origin place of the Choctaw people. The site was returned to the Choctaw in 2008, and is considered to be a sacred site. While the Nanih Waiya Mound is open to the public, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians requests for visitors to be respectful of the site and its meaning to the Choctaw People. The Cave mound site is closed to the public and requires approval from the Office of Public Information and Choctaw Wildlife and Parks. Tours are available upon request by contacting their Office of Public Information or filling out a Tour Request Form.
