An aquarium housing over 200 species of native fish, reptiles and amphibians tells an ecological story of rivers, streams, lakes, marshes and the Mississippi Sound. “The Swamp” is home to animals including alligators, turtles and fish surrounded by native foliage. The 300-acre nature area with native foliage is great for birding or a stroll over the 2.5-mile nature trail with interpretive stops along the way.

Montrose and the Montrose Museum

Montrose is a two-story columned Greek Revival home built as a wedding present for the daughter of Alfred Brooks. It is now operated by the Holly Springs Garden Club as a house museum. The arboretum contains over 50 different specimens of trees native to the area.

Delta Blues Museum

Established in 1979 by the Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees and re-organized as a stand-alone museum in 1999, the Delta Blues Museum is the state’s oldest music museum.

From prehistoric fossils, Indian artifacts and Civil War history, to the rescued remnants of Chief Greenwood Leflore’s lost mansion, the Museum of the Mississippi Delta offers an eclectic and fascinating overview of this most unusual corner of America. A short drive west of the museum will lead you to Fort Pemberton, site of one of the Civil War’s more eccentric skirmishes. The fabled steamship Star of the West, the first vessel to draw fire from Fort Sumter in 1861, lies buried in the mud of the Tallahatchie River just north of the fort.

The Gateway to the Blues Museum and Visitors Center on Highway 61 is the first place many people see when they roll into Tunica. This rustic train depot, circa 1895, is a must-stop for travelers before and after a visit to Tunica. Inside, travel counselors are ready to give directions, advice and the latest information about events, restaurants and attractions. They can even help book you a hotel room, make dinner reservations or find you a perfect, one-of-a-kind souvenir in the gift store.

The Visitors Center is home to the Gateway to the Blues Museum. This must-see attraction for all music lovers, will tell the remarkable story of how The Blues was born and the role Tunica played in building the genre’s legacy.

Vicksburg National Military Park

Commemorating one of the Civil War’s pivotal campaigns, Vicksburg National Military Park is arguably Mississippi’s most renowned historical attraction. Confederate President Jefferson Davis himself referred to Vicksburg as the “nailhead that holds the South’s two halves together,” and there’s no better way to explore the significant role the city played throughout the Civil War than by discovering the park’s many attractions firsthand. Vicksburg National Military Park is jam-packed with attractions that serve as a testament to the location’s prominent place in American history. More than 1,400 memorial monuments, tablets and markers dot the 1,800-acre park to honor soldiers who served on both sides of the Civil War. The park also features an impressive 20 miles of trenches and earthworks that have been reconstructed to reflect days gone by. The USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum are also located within the park, enabling visitors to view the restored vessel, along with Civil War-era artifacts recovered during the boat’s excavation.

The military park’s scenic, and often hilly, roads are popular with cyclists and walkers. Cycling, including the use of e-bikes, is permitted on park roads and parking lots only.

Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum

The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum was established in 1986 to preserve and interpret the maritime history and heritage of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The recently completed museum accomplishes this mission through an array of exhibits, artifacts and an extraordinary collection of photographs which tell the story from the time of the first Indian settlement through generations of immigrants whose journey contributed to the melting-pot culture of the Gulf Coast. Open Monday-Saturday 9-4:30pm and Sunday Noon-4pm gift shop available.

Tennessee Williams Home & Welcome Center

The Tennessee Williams Home & Welcome Center is the restored childhood home of American playwright Tennessee Williams. Born Thomas Lanier Williams III in 1911, Williams spent his earliest years in this Victorian-style house, which originally served as the rectory for St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where his grandfather, Reverend Walter Dakin, served.

Constructed circa 1875, the Victorian house functions as both a museum and the official visitor center for the City of Columbus. Inside, guests may explore period furnishings, exhibits on Williams’s early life and influences, and the history of the house itself. It has also been designated a National Literary Landmark in recognition of its significance in American literature.
