For over a century now, Beaver Dam Lake and the area surrounding it have been regarded as a premiere waterfowl destination in North Mississippi. Made famous through the writing of Nash Buckingham in the first part of the 20th century, it has become a place of historical significance that many hope to visit in their lifetime.

This same area is now home to Beaver Dam Hunting Services; a family owned business providing professionally guided duck hunts since 1982. The property and habitat we hunt is as vast and diverse as the species of waterfowl that call it home during the winter. From flooded grain fields and willow sloughs, to the hallowed cypress filled waters of Beaver Dam, we hope to provide a hunt of a lifetime as you experience legendary waterfowling at its best.

At McKenna Ranch, we hunt whitetail deer and eastern wild turkey. We also hunt hogs when available, as hogs come and go. Our ranch is managed to increase the body size and numbers of the wildlife. Tallahatchie Hunts

Tallahatchie Hunts offers guided duck and deer hunting on private lands in Tallahatchie County Mississippi. There are several public and private game preserves that serve as resting areas that help us maintain large populations of waterfowl throughout the winter months.

The Tallahatchie, Coldwater, and Yocona Rivers all come together in Tallahatchie County and drain the northwest Mississippi reservoirs of Sardis, Enid, and Arkabutla. Backwater flooding is common during the winter months on these Mississippi Delta lands and most of our hunting is done on acreage adjoining these rivers.

The deer population of our county has exploded since 1991. There are many large whitetails roaming in the field and the timber. Every year, record-book bucks are harvested here.

One of the most experienced guides in the Mississippi Delta, Mike “Catfish” Flautt has been hunting this area for over fifty years. Season after season, Catfish’s clients can attest to his almost perfect success rate, as he does not hunt the heated pit blinds of deserted fields, but hunts “where the ducks are” everyday of the season, no matter what the weather brings.

Mississippi Delta Hunts

Rice and soybean fields are prevalent. As any duck hunter knows, rice fields are waterfowl magnets. Farming operations are managed to achieve maximum yields for both grain and the overwintering of waterfowl. These fields and bordering forests also attract the elusive whitetail deer. Duck hunting is from 1 of 22 heated pits (seat 4 people per pit). The guide puts out decoys and calls the birds, while a well-trained retriever gets them. Waders are not needed. For goose hunting, transportation to and from the field, rags, parkas, retriever and guide are provided. Over 100 year’s combined duck hunting experience.

Longleaf Trace Equestrian Trail

The 24-mile, 15-25-foot-wide native soil equestrian trail located along the Longleaf Trace is recognized as one of South Mississippi’s finest. The little-known jewel is regularly maintained and parallel to the Trace, occasionally crossing from one side to the other due to terrain or other considerations. The trail has a large trailer parking/staging area at its northern end (Carson) that includes 10 horse stalls, a primitive camp area, and a group pavilion. A large trailer parking area is also available at the Sumrall Station. Equestrian stalls, a primitive camp area, and a group pavilion is available at the South end of the equestrian trail at the Ronnie Shows Nature Center.

Parking for the Ronnie Shows Nature Center stalls and primitive camp is at the Sumrall Station (5 ½ mi.) or the Epley Station (1 ½ mi.). Equestrians are joint users of the restrooms and rest stops along the route with the hikers, bikers, and other users of the Longleaf Trace.

The Longleaf Trace is South Mississippi’s premier running, biking, hiking, and equestrian trail. The 44-mile linear park extends from Hattiesburg (elevation 220′) through Sumrall (290′), Bassfield (460′), and Carson to Prentiss (336′). A Rails-To-Trails conversion, the trail is 10 feet wide and paved.

The Tanglefoot Trail® is Mississippi’s longest Rails to Trails conversion, meandering 43.6 miles through the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the Mississippi Hills National Heritage Area. It is here you will experience a bit of our history as you pass through fields, forests, meadows and wetlands while you travel down the path of the Chickasaws and Meriwether Lewis, or the railroad built by Col. William C. Falkner, great-grandfather of Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner.

You’re sure to enjoy the slow pace of our Mississippi small towns and all they have to offer between New Albany at the northern end and Houston at the southern end.
