Visit Mississippi Celebrates Completion of State Welcome Center Enhancements During National Travel and Tourism Week

TOOMSUBA, Miss. —Visit Mississippi, Visit Meridian, and the Mississippi Department of Transportation gathered with state and local tourism partners in Lauderdale County to celebrate the completion of enhancements at Mississippi’s state welcome centers. The event highlighted the importance of travel during U.S. Travel Association’s National Travel and Tourism Week as both an economic driver and a unifying force connecting communities across Mississippi and the nation.

“As we celebrate National Travel and Tourism Week, we’re proud to highlight the vital role tourism plays in strengthening Mississippi’s economy and showcasing the authentic experiences that make our state unique,” said Rochelle Hicks, Director of Visit Mississippi. “The completion of enhancements at our state welcome centers reflects our commitment to creating inviting, informative spaces that engage visitors from the moment they arrive. These updates help guide travelers to local destinations while supporting the continued growth of Mississippi’s tourism industry.”

The ceremony showcased interactive digital kiosks, artwork by Mississippians, and new furnishings and branded elements now featured across the state’s welcome centers. Together, these enhancements create a more engaging and immersive experience for travelers while highlighting Mississippi’s cultural identity and sense of place.

The completion of these enhancements marks a significant milestone in Mississippi’s ongoing commitment to welcoming travelers and strengthening travel infrastructure statewide. From gateways like the Lauderdale County Welcome Center in Toomsuba to locations across Mississippi, these centers play a key role in encouraging exploration, connecting visitors to local experiences, and guiding journeys throughout the state and beyond.

“National Travel and Tourism Week is an opportunity to recognize an industry that is essential to the economic strength and quality of life of communities across Mississippi and the nation,” said Danielle Morgan, Executive Director of the Mississippi Tourism Association. “Tourism is one of Mississippi’s leading economic drivers. Every visit fuels local businesses, supports restaurants, attractions and main streets, and helps build places where people want to live, work and invest. As this year’s theme reminds us, travel is not optional to Mississippi’s success. It is essential.”

The celebration also aligns with the national America250 commemoration, which invites communities to reflect on the country’s past, present, and future as the nation approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026. Mississippians are encouraged to participate in local America250 Mississippi initiatives taking place across the state.

Established by the U.S. Travel Association, National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is the U.S. travel industry’s annual tradition of recognizing the essential role travel plays in powering our economy, strengthening communities and connecting America.
