Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery

Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery in Holly Springs is a museum and art gallery dedicated to the life and work of local Impressionist painter Kate Freeman Clark (1875–1957). Born in Holly Springs, Clark trained and exhibited widely in the northeastern United States around the turn of the 20th century, studying under noted artists including William Merritt Chase and showing her work in major American art institutions before retreating from the art world and returning home in the 1920s. Upon her death, she bequeathed to Holly Springs her extensive body of paintings and drawings, her residence, and funds to establish a gallery to house her art, resulting in the founding of the Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery in the early 1960s. The gallery, located adjacent to Clark’s former home, now houses more than a thousand of her works and stands as one of the largest single-artist collections in the world, offering visitors insight into her landscapes, still lifes, and portraits, and celebrating her contribution to American art.
